Notice of Destruction of Special Education Records

Date of Notice: June 10, 2024

The Northwest Special Education Region (Foster, Glocester, Foster-Glocester Region, and Scituate) would like to inform parents/guardians and former students of the intent to destroy inactive special education records related to the identification, evaluation and educational placement of students who graduated, moved or no longer received special education services as of school years 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2013-14. Inactive records are maintained for the required period after special education services have ended for the student. Special education services end when students are no longer eligible for services, graduate, complete their education program at age 22, or move out of the school district.

In accordance with federal and state laws, the Northwest Special Education Region is required to inform parents and former students when personally identifiable information collected, maintained, or used to provide services under the IDEA is no longer needed to provide educational services to the child.

You must be the student (if age 18 or over) or the parent/legal guardian of the student to obtain the records and proper identification will be required. For any students over age 18, proper documentation will be required in order to release records to their parent/legal guardian. Individuals interested in obtaining their educational records before they are destroyed must submit a written request to the Northwest Special Education Region, 7 Rustic Hill Road, North Scituate, RI 02857, prior to August 15, 2024.
